DOCman 2.0 RC3

We are happy to announce the first release candidate (RC) for DOCman 2.0. This release completes the 2.0 feature set and brings Joomla 3 support. We also added 12 new features and fixed many of the issues found during the beta process.​

DOCman 2.0 is production ready and used by many sites already. For a overview of all features also check our previous DOCman 2.0 Alpha, Beta and Beta 3 announcements. DOCman 2 RC 1 includes the following exciting new features :​

New Features

1. Joomla 3 Compatibility
Joomla 3 is fully supported. The user interface has been improved to make full use of Twitter Bootstrap and blend in nicely with Isis, the default Joomla 3 administrator template. DOCman now looks great on all Joomla! versions (2.5 and 3.x).
2. Filtered Document List
The filtered document list is a great way to display specific documents in a separate menu item. You can filter your documents based on their author, category and sort them as you fit.
Our veteran users would remember this view as Documents list in previous betas which didn’t support search and DOCLink. We got rid of all these restrictions to let you use this view as you see fit. A filtered list can now be linked to and searched in. Your existing menu items are migrated automatically.
3. Table layout for Document List view

A Hierarchical Document Table view has been added. The view allows you to display both your categories and documents in a tabular, compact format.​

4. Simpler permissions for document owners
Document owners can now view and edit their documents regardless of the access level and published status. You no longer need to set up complex ACL rules to have a workflow where people can upload and manage their own documents. This makes it very easy to allow users to manage their own documents.
5. Read more support in description fields
Document descriptions now support the read more button in your editor to limit what gets displayed in the list overview for both categories and documents. The full description will be visible in the details view for your documents and categories.

This lets you keep the list views clean and simple while you can give all the details you want to your users through the details view.
6. Advanced parameters to fine tune the user experience
We added new parameters to force download all files without previews or open download links in new browser tab. Support for Google Docs Viewer has also been improved. DOCman can now preview even more files types.
7. Google Analytics download tracking
If you use Google Analytics on your site, downloads on your site will automatically appear in the events section of Google Analytics. This makes it very easy to track downloads.

8. Built-in support for Komento
You can now add comments to your documents easily. We have added support for the popular commenting solution Komento from our friends at Stackideas. You just need to go into Komento settings and enable the DOCman integration. That’s it.

9. Remote linking to file:// and ftp:// locations
You can now use DOCman to serve files using file:// and ftp:// protocols. Since DOCman fetches and streams files from these URLs you can still get the protection against hotlinking and use features like video streaming. It also protects your usernames and passwords from leaking to the outside world. This also lets you easily connect DOCman with your company Intranet.
10. Set an upload folder per menu item
With the new upload folder parameter in menu items, it is possible to limit the folders your frontend users can see and upload files to a single folder to protect your sensitive files.
11. Lot’s of smaller improvements
We worked hard on making the file management as fast as possible. Our tests show great improvements especially for large folders.
We also have tons of fixes and optimizations included. Particularly important ones are: Full Internet Explorer support, search plugin improvements, DOClink fixes, ability to hide icons, etc …
12. RESTful API out of the box
DOCman 2 is one of the first Joomla extensions that comes with a complete RESTful API. All DOCman menu items come with JSON support that lets you use and extend DOCman in custom software like your own company CRM or develop your own mobile application serving your documents easily.
What is next?

We are now making finishing touches on the user interface and working on a solution that will migrate your DOCman 1.6 installation to 2.0 without any efforts.
We are also starting to get DOCman 2.0 translated into several different languages to give you an out of the box solution in your own language.
